LOVING LATELY: COLOR DRENCHING

As we wrap up the finishing touches on our guest room, I’m already thinking about our next house project before we’ve even finished our current one. The next two rooms on my list are the living room and the main bedroom, and while I’m planning to keep the living room white since our house is pretty open concept on the first floor, painting the guest room has really given me the urge to paint the bedroom, too. I’ve been really drawn to muted mid-tone blues lately, and I think those colors would be perfect for color drenching in our bedroom!

So what exactly is color drenching? Color drenching refers to the concept of painting the walls, ceiling, and trim of a room all in the same color, creating an almost immersive effect. I’m a big fan of painting walls and trim the same color (and even the same sheen), but I love the idea of taking it an extra step and painting the ceiling the same color, too. I’ve been seeing this trend more and more lately and I think the added saturation it brings to a room makes it feel so much more complete and cohesive. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite examples of color drenching below!

I’ve been absolutely glued to Mrs. Jessica Darling‘s laundry room updates and her use of color drenching here is perfection. Small spaces like laundry rooms are a great place to use a more saturated color, and when paired with wall treatments it packs even more of a punch. I’d love to color drench our main bedroom in a mid-tone blue like this – it’s such a serene color that adds character without making the room feel too dark!

I make it a habit of reading Architectural Digest online every day, and this photo from a recent tour of actress Whitney Cummings’ home stopped me in my tracks. I’ve always dreamed of a future home with space for a moody lounge/library situation, and the design of this one is so dreamy. Jake Arnold, who designed the home, excels when it comes to designing moody spaces, and this room is no exception. I love that both the ceiling and built-ins are coated in the perfect dark green to make the space feel cozy and intimate.

Megan from Hart Interiors is one of my favorite follows on Instagram, and I’m obsessed with her use of color in her home. Her son’s room is the perfect shade of dusty blue, and painting the closet doors and trim the same color as the walls makes the gold hardware and chocolatey accents in the room pop even more.

I love everything about this room by Amber Interiors and it proves that color drenching works with lighter colors, too. Cladding the ceiling in the same nickel gap planks as the wall and painting it all the same color makes the room feel so much more cohesive and even feels a bit unexpected. The cabinets are painted a similar but slightly darker color, which helps them stand out a bit and adds even more interest to this beautiful space.

I just discovered Erin from Kismet House and I adore her home! She has a really unique style and her bathroom encapsulates that – it’s such a cool space. There’s a lot going on in this room and it serves multiple functions, but the color drenching helps tie everything together. I feel like color drenching is a great way to give yourself the flexibility to have fun with decorative accents because it provides a blank canvas but it’s never boring!

Now that I think about it, the music room in Chris Loves Julia’s former home might have been my first introduction to color drenching. I just love how this room is a little jewel box in the home, and color drenching it makes it pack an even bigger punch. I’m normally not a fan of the color red, but this muddier tone is a shade that even I can get behind. Because the room is so saturated with color, the walls don’t need much – just some simple candle sconces and artwork pair well with the deep red color to make a statement.

I’ve been following Emily from We’re the Whites on Instagram since she and her husband were in their apartment days, and it’s been so fun to see them renovate their stunning brick home. Emily’s taste is incredible and her office is one of my favorite spaces in their home. The French doors let in tons of light, so even though the walls, trim, ceiling, and built-ins are coated in a deeper color, the room doesn’t feel too dark. Using one color throughout the room really allows the decor on the built-ins to shine, and the contrast between the light herringbone floors and the dark green on the walls adds even more interest!

Jean Stoffer is one of my favorite interior designers and honestly, she can do no wrong in my eyes – her designs are the definition of timeless! She has truly mastered the art of creating a home filled with depth and texture. I’m obsessed with the butler’s pantry from The Madison project – from the marble backsplash to the gorgeous dark blue tile to the brass accents. The color drenched walls tie it all together for a bespoke space that’s filled with character. I love the muted blue color of this room and it’s giving me major inspiration for our main bedroom project!

Looking at all these photos makes me even more excited to use color drenching in our home! I couldn’t resist the urge to pick up some paint samples from Home Depot last week, and I’m so excited to add some more color to a space we spend so much time in. I’m envisioning a pretty blue color coating the walls, trim, and ceiling, and even some wall treatments on the big blank wall next to our bed. I’m especially excited about how our bedroom gallery wall will stand out against a more colorful wall. I’ll be sure to keep you all posted as we start on our bedroom plans – I can’t wait to share more!
